Raised by J H Kidd , Greytown, Wairarapa Valley, New Zealand c1934 from Kidd's Orange Red x Golden Delicious. Introduced in 1960 and named in 1965. Gala has become a well established and popular commercial variety in New Zealand, Europe, South Africa, North and South America. More recently commercial planting has also been increasing in the UK. The more highly coloured forms Royal Gala and Gala Must are favoured for commercial planting. Medium sized, oblong-conical fruit. Pale yellow skin covered with bright crimson flush and stripes. Firm, juicy, yellowish cream coloured flesh. At its best Gala can have a lovely sweet perfumed flavour. But it often lacks flavour. Stores well but flavour fades with keeping. Moderately vigorous, free spurring tree. Partially self-fertile good cropper. Attractive blossom. Resistant to mildew but susceptible to scab and canker. Best avoided in more humid areas but a good garden variety otherwise. |
