An old variety probably originating from Normandy, France. The earliest reference to the name dates from 1771. Grown commercially in France where it is a popular and widely available culinary and late dessert variety usually known as 'Canada'. Medium to large, short-round-conical fruit. Often irregular or lopsided. The greenish yellow skin is usually, but not always, almost completely covered in a browish green russet. Fairly dry, firm cream coloured flesh turning crumbly in storage. The sharp taste mellows with keeping. Keeps its shape or makes a stiff puree when cooked. Good cooked flavour. Vigorous, triploid tree. Good cropper. Attractive blossom. |
